“No,” she tried to fight a yawn. “It’s alright. I can stay awake with you.” Tiana nestled in closer. “Talk to me. Tell me about it…. your dreams. Maybe that will help.”

He looked to her, reluctant. It might help, sure, but at what cost? He’d worry the upcoming day away wondering if he’d given her nightmares too. “Honey, I don’t want to…scare you, especially now.” He shivered and clung tighter to her. “It was heavy stuff.”

She frowned slightly, remembering the dreams she had had when he was away. The visions had been so real in her mind. That was one of the reasons she had easily believed he had passed away during the fighting. Tiana shuddered slightly, remembering those days. “It’s alright, sweetheart. You shouldn’t keep things like that bottled up inside.”

He felt her shudder, but finally decided to relent and say it. “I was—” he swallowed. “I was on the field again..”

He told her everything, slowly, recounting any detail he could remember. The haze. The death and decay. His sick, helpless fear. He fought back tears as he trailed off, unable to remember more. “I..I sort of forgot I was back home, you know? I thought for a minute that I was shipped over there again and I’d never be leaving.”

Her eyes watered slightly as he spoke. To think that Naveen, her wonderful, loving husband, had had to go through something so horrible. Tiana held him close and kissed his forehead. “I’m so sorry, Naveen. So so sorry.” She brushed his hair back and planted another kiss on his temple. “But you’re home now. You’re safe, and you don’t ever have to go back. I won’t let anything like that happen to you.” Not again, never again.

It wasn’t your fault, he tried to whisper, but his voice caught in his throat and he just kissed her cheek before sighing shakily and deciding he’d at least try to look asleep, for her sake. He curled up as he lay beside her; maybe her breath and her heartbeat would lull him. “I love you,” he murmured.

“I don’t believe you,” she teased. “But thanks.” Tiana sighed. It seemed pretty obvious that Naveen wasn’t going to get any sleep that night. She was determined to stay awake with him, lest he have another panic attack.

He smiled, sighed and wrapped his arm around her waist. It would be another day of work for them tomorrow at the Palace and he knew they both needed shut-eye. “Get some sleep, baby. I’m okay, I promise.” He didn’t really want to be alone with his thoughts, but he realized that with Tiana pressed against him, even asleep, he never would be.

“I will always stay with you,” she told him, once again wrapping her arms around him. Tiana planted another kiss on his forehead and absentmindedly rubbed his neck, hoping he could get some comfort from her presence. “I wish I could do more for you,” she whispered. “I wish I could take it all away.”
“Tiana, you already have,” he mumbled back. Naveen cuddled closer, trying to fall asleep again but failing. He knew he was in for another sleepless night, but he figured he could at least spend it somewhere nice.

She kissed him back and sighed of relief. This was the Naveen she knew, not that other one she had seen only a few minutes ago. She suspected it wasn’t the last time she would see that Naveen but… well, they would get through things as best they could. “Are you feeling better now?” she asked as they broke the kiss. “Do you need anything? Some water or….?”
“No, no,” he said quickly, pulling her back so she was lying on the bed again, beside him. “Just..just stay with me,” he continued with the slightest hint of begging.

“No, no,” she whispered to him, holding him tighter. “Never. You don’t ever have to go back. I promise.” Tiana left more kisses along his cheek this time. “I promise, Naveen. You’re safe now. You’re here, with me… and the baby.” She took his hand and guided it to her stomach. “Everything’s going to be fine.”

He nodded, using his free hand to wipe away the cold sweat that had broken out over his brow. The..the baby, he still thought of it with some astonishment, twitched a bit beneath his hand. “I know, honey,” he breathed, finally turning to her with a deep, grateful kiss. “I know.”

All he needed was to lay against her, to see and hear and smell her, to know she was really there. But he nestled a little closer and answered, muffled by her body. “I just..I see…it’s like I’m back there.” The thought of it, the sudden shooting pain in his foot, made him cling to her almost like a child. “Don’t let me go back..”

“I’m sorry..” he sniffed, eyes flitting around the dark room, trying to take it in, forcing himself not to think back to the battlefield. He breathed deeply, trying to control the shuddering lump in his throat. He wrapped his arms gently around Tiana’s waist, wishing he could stay like this all night.

Tiana furrowed her brows. “Naveen, sweetheart, you don’t have anything to be sorry about.” She kissed his head again. “You cry as much as you need to.” Her heart went out to him, but she was thankful he was finally starting to calm down. “Do you… do you want to talk about it?” Maybe that would help… or maybe it would only make things worse for him.
